This simple wooden ash catcher is painted red. Its' design, painted in white, is comprised of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, with lotus flowers and swirling vines.

Ganesha is revered in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. He is highly recognizable with his elephant head and human body, representing the soul (atman) and the physical (maya) respectively. He is also the patron of writers, travelers, students, commerce, and new projects (for which he removes obstacles from one's path) and is rather fond of sweets. He organizes and clears the mind so that awareness may flow into it. He is the giver of success and is associated with general abundance in life.

The lotus flower seed grows through muddy waters into a beautiful flower. When it rains, the droplets do not stick to the petals but rather fall peacefully back into the water. The lotus maintains its peace, beauty and purity through all obstacles it faces. It does not allow itself to be distracted from the external world. The seed of the lotus serves as a reminder to stick to one's spiritual path, regardless of how ugly life might be, regardless of hardships because the beauty of enlightenment can be found amongst the darkness.
